Jackson Sloan has been around for decades on the r&b and jazz scenes, fronting such bands as Rent Party and latterly Oo-Bop-Sh-Bam, but this new CD is under his own name. Described by Ray Gelato in his liner-notes as a ‘modern day Joe Turner or Wynonie Harris’, which is quite a coFormer front-man of R&B revivalists Rent Party, and some of fervent devotees of ’40s/50s American culture, Jackson celebrates the jump-blues sound of Wynonie Harris and early Jimmy Witherspoon in a dozen original numbers, pitch-perfectly supported by tenor saxist Ray Gelato, guitarist Richard Studholme and other like-minded workmates. Very cool.

As usual the night kicks off with a jive class aimed at beginners followed by 2 sets from the band and DJs filling in. Booking recommended.

A night of unique blues and jump-jive from “…six of the UK’s top blues & roots musicians. The Cadillac Kings play music inspired by the sounds & styles of the ‘40s & ‘50s, with a mix of mostly original songs laced with a few well-chosen covers from the likes of T-Bone Walker, Roy Brown & Champion Jack Dupree. The Cadillac Kings are a firm favourites on both the blues & jump-jive scenes.

At our March Jive Party, Vancouver-born Trumpeter Jay Phelps fronts his Big Jive Band hand-picked from the best Jive and Swing musicians in the Capital hell-bent on a mission to pack the Rivoli floor with dancers throughout their two sets.

Jay will be aided and abetted by the sublime and powerful vocals of Lauren Dalrymple whom you may remember from when she fronted The Vince Dunn Orchestra at our Jive Party in September 2012.

More about Jay Phelps:
Now based in London, Jay is at the forefront of the young and creative generation of jazz musicians in the UK, with an instantly recognizable warm and projecting tone. Jay distinguished himself early on as the youngest band-leader in the Vancouver International Jazz Festival’s history. He has performed and recorded with a veritable who’s who of both UK and international jazz artists such as Courtney Pine, Andrew Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Brown, John Hendricks, Nasheet Waits, George Benson, Jamie Cullum, Sir John Dankworth, Dennis Rollins, Guy Barker, Amy Winehouse, Charlotte Church, Hugh Masakela and Jazz Jamaica.

Jay Phelps currently tours with his eponymous quartet and is featured in a diverse range of bands such as Soweto Kinch The New Emancipation project, Skatroniks, Ska Cubano, Courtney Pine’s Jazz Warriors project, and leads his own big band project featuring BBC Radio 2’s Clare Teal.

About Lauren Dalrymple:

British born of Guyanese parentage, Lauren Dalrymple has been singing since the age 8. As a teenager she undertook intense vocal training and made a living as an in-demand backing vocalist before going solo in 1991 at the age of 19.

Since then she has lent her immense vocals to the likes of Tomorrow Warriors, Afro-Cuban Allstars, Zoe Rahman and Keith Waithe, but is perhaps best known for her 7 year writing and performing partnership with Latin-jazz pianist Alex Wilson.

Lauren features on three of Alex’s albums. She is also a featured vocalist on  Gwyn Jay Allen’s highly aclaimed album, I Love Louis-A Creole Tribute. Lauren has also celebrated over 12 years of running a successful weekly jazz jam night at The Effra, Brixton.

As usual there will be a Jive lesson for beginners to kick off the evening, then you can practice your dance steps on one of the best sprung maple dance floors in the country at one of the most iconic and atmospheric venues in Britain – the Rivoli Ballroom.

Springboard for Children is getting funky with a fabulous Jive Night in the heart of South London to raise money for children who need our support in the local area.

Pick up some jive steps in a 45-minute class held by Ken Richman, co-promoter of Jive Party, and Hev McCrudden (of Rock Bottoms Dance Weekenders) then strut your stuff for the rest of the evening accompanied by King Groovy and the Horn Stars, a 17-piece swing band.

Set in the stunning Holst Hall, a 3-minute jaunt from North Dulwich train station, this will be an evening to remember!

Ding Dong Daddios are back to bring you the most danceable tunes from the swing heydays of the ’40s and ’50s. Get ready to take a Choo Choo Ch’Boogie runaway train ride from Five Guys Named Mo all the way to Mac the Knife, passing through Istanbul (not Constantinople) on the way!

As usual there will be a Jive lesson for beginners to kick off the evening, then you can practice your dance skills in the Rivoli’s grade-II-listed interior on one of the best sprung maple dance floors in the country.

Getting the new year into full swing, Juke Joint Jump return for a night guaranteed to be packed with top quality, pumped-up, rootin’ tootin’ and hootin’ jive, swing and old-fashioned rhythm n blues. The bands main influences are Big Joe Turner, Wynonie Harris, Louis Jordan, Roy Brown, Bullmoose Jackson and Amos Milburn but they also draw on a variety of musical styles to add plenty of variety to the show.

At Jive Party, tracks from their album are regular favourites, including the title track ‘Woman Stop Flappin’ Yer Gums’! Ian Aitken and the band are all seasoned perfomers in the genre and we expect it to be a popular night, which is why booking is recommended.

Exciting big band swing sounds are back at the Rivoli courtesy of London’s grooviest 17-piece band!

As well as frequent appearances at Jive Party, the band has played gigs throughout London and the home counties – notably at the 100 Club’s popular Stompin’ night, famous jazz venue the Bull’s Head in Barnes and burlesque nightspot the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club in the East End, as well as charity balls, weddings and the Southbank Centre.

It’s a rapid return visit for Vince Dunn – King Groovy’s drummer – after his brilliant big band performed for us in September.

Remember, Jive Party is a place to practice your dancing – every evening starts with a jive dance class – and you’re encouraged to practice what you’ve learnt throughout the night – feel free to ask others to dance, even if you’re a beginner!
